๐๏ธ Shore spotsEl Tatio is a geothermal area located in the Andes Mountains in Chile, on the altiplano at an altitude of 4,280 m in the Antofagasta region, at the foot of the Tatio and Linzor volcanoes (5,680 m).
The site is located 90 km north of San Pedro de Atacama, and about 125 km east of Calama on National Road 21, which passes through the Indian village of Chiu-Chiu. The place was named "El Tatio", from "Tata iu" in kunza, which means "the grandfather who cries" (el abuelo que llora), in reference to the geysers and the mountain visible on the site where the shape of a man lying down can be seen.
To observe the Geysers of Tatio in the Chilean region of Atacama, it is worth it! Indeed, the terrestrial wells wake up very early in the morning. From 4 am, the 80 geysers come out of their torpor and spit out volutes of white steam. It is the combination of burning water and icy air that allows their formation. The eruptions can reach up to 6 m in height. However, do not to get too close to the fumaroles because in addition to the burning water, rocks are sometimes projected.
It is important to arrive early in the morning, no later than 6:00-6:30 am: it is at daybreak that the geysers begin their activity!
